Ispod svega toga sam provukla novogodišnje lampice.

Šeme kućica pogledajte ovde, ovde i ovde.

Ukoliko imate više vremena i strpljenja, vredi probati i ovo. To planiram za sledeću godinu.

Since it seems that we will have no snow this holiday season, we decided to make our own winter village. The houses are made from thicker white paper and for the rooftops we used felt glued to paper. The Christmas trees are also made from felt. Everything is decorated using glue and snowflakes, stars and glitter. I put Christmas lights under the little houses, but it would have been better if I had LED tealights (I've seen them in Chinese shops, but they emit only white light, and we were going for different colours).

You can find some house templates here, here and here.

And if you have more time, these felt houses are definitely worth a try. I leave that for next year.

We made these decorations last Christmas, but due to my morning sickness I didn't manage to write a post about them in time. So here are the instructions, ready for this Christmas.

You will need:

  • sugar
  • some glitter
  • water
  • cookie cutters
  • a tray
  • a match, a tooth pick or a straw
  • ribbons or strings
Mix the sugar with the glitter and add just a little water. The mixture should resemble snow (the sugar should not dissolve, it should only be a little wet). Put the cookie cutters on the tray and fill them with the mixture of sugar and water. Use your fingers to press the sugar into the cutter, add little stars or balls or any other decoration if you wish, and make a small hole using a match. It occurred to me later that we should have pressed a short piece of straw into the mixture, so that the opening would not close during the drying period.

Let the ornaments dry overnight. If the mixture of sugar and water isn't too watery, you will be able to remove the cookie cutter almost immediately, so you can use it again straight away.

When the decorations are dry, hang the ornaments on the Christmas tree using a string or a ribbon.

Odbrojavanje do Božića - Counting down till Christmas

Ove godine smo prvi put pravile adventski kalendar. Na internetu možete pronaći more ideja, mada smo mi na ovu došli sami.

Potrebno vam je sledeće:

A konačan proizvod izgleda ovako:

P.S. Ujutru mnogo lakše i brže ustajemo za vrtić!

* * *

This is the first time we made our own advent calendar. There are lots and lots of ideas on the internet, but we came up with our own.

What you need is the following:
  • 24 empty matchboxes
  • decorative tapes
  • glue
  • scissors
  • a piece of thicker paper to glue the boxes on
We glued the tapes around the boxes (if I had to do this again I would glue only one small piece of tape on top of the box, not around it) and then glued the box onto the green paper. Ema practiced writing numbers (which you, no doubt, see for yourself).

Still, besides making the calendar, the fun of it is finding out what's inside it every morning. I am not a huge fan of feeding kids chocolate every morning or giving them trinkets that they will forget about after an hour or so (I'm sure you can relate to that, especially after stepping barefoot onto a tiny "little pony" in the middle of the night) just for the sake of giving. Also, the kids will get so many presents for Christmas, that it sometimes gets too much and loses all meaning. So the first box contained a candy, the second one a balloon, and then I thought of some more creative ideas.

1. I've cut up a picture of Dora the Explorer from some magazine and made a puzzle. At the bottom of the picture I've written a note: Where you lay your head in the evening, you can find a present waiting. Forgive me, but in Serbian this rhymes and sounds much better :) The note gets separated in different pieces of the puzzle, so you can read it only after putting the puzzle together. When Ema finished the puzzle, we read the note and she rushed off to her bedroom to find her prize.

2. I put a note in the box saying that the box is too small to contain a surprise (again, it rhymes in Serbian) and put clues as where to find the pieces of the puzzle (I've cut up the box of Nesquick, the one with the rabbit on it, and turned it into a puzzle).

3. You can make small kits for making bracelets (beads and a piece of string), so that your child can make a piece of jewelry.

4. I thought of putting tickets for the cinema, theatre or museum, depending on what we can manage to see in December.

5. I am also planning to make tickets for a "home movie night", for watching a full length cartoon with the whole family and lots of popcorn.

So, be creative and let you imagination run wild. You know what your child likes and enjoys, and this is a good way to start of the Christmas fun.

P.S. And it's a great way to get your kids to get up earlier for kindergarten :)

Za jednu Anđeliju - Made for Angelia

Prodavnica nudi i gotove proizvode, vezene, pletene, dekupaž i slično. Ova portiklica je kupljena tamo, a slovo sam izvezla po šemi iz knjige „Spell it out“, autorke Joan Elliott.

Portiklica je namenjena jednoj maloj Anđeliji.

A bib made for little Angelia. The pattern used for the letter "A" is taken from the book "Spell it out" by Joan Elliot. The bib itself was bought in Novi Sad, in a small shop called "Kuća starih zanata", the first one that I know of that offers cross stitch kits (a pattern, a piece of fabric and the threads needed for this project), as well as prefinished products such as oven mitts, bibs, dresses for small girls with a piece of fabric sown onto them, that you can embellish with cross stitch as you wish.

Ema u svetu dinosaurusa 2 (fosili) - Ema in the World of Dinosaurs part 2 (Fossils)

Napravila sam dve vrste zadataka, jednu jednostavniju i jednu malo složeniju varijantu.

1. šta ti je potrebno za postavljanje stola? (tanjiri, odn. fioka sa tanjirima)
2. šta još? (escajg, odn. fioka sa escajgom)
3. i šta još? (salvete, odn. korpica gde nam stoje salvete)

Složenija varijanta je imala zadatke ovog tipa:

Kada mi je lutka prehlađena,
ili je boli glava,
ja želim da je pregledam,
pa mi treba pribor za ... (lekara)

Postoji jedno mesto
gde je uvek hladno,
pažljivo otvori vrata
i naći ćeš me tamo. (frižider)

U kutiji sam crne boje
gde čuvaš šnalice svoje.

Tamo gde uveče spustiš glavu
pronaći ćeš još jednu tajnu malu. (ispod jastuka)

U kuhinju me je sakrio neko,
tamo gde tata i mama greju mleko. (mikrotalasna)

While reading the books I wrote about in the previous post, we came across a “paleontologist” and learnt that the paleontologist’s job is to find fossils. Ema found that job to be very interesting, so we decided to make our own fossils.
To make your own fossils you will need some salt dough, small plastic dinosaurs and a regular or microwave oven.
The recipe for salt dough is as follows:
·         1 cup of flour
·         ½ cup of salt
·         ½ cup of water
First mix the flour and the salt, then slowly add the water (I needed less than ½ cup). Knead the dough so that it resembles soft clay.
Then make impressions of the dinosaurs in the dough, lay your fossils on a plate and put the plate in the microwave. Set the microwave to “defrost” or even a lower temperature, for about 5 minutes for a start. When the microwave turns off, turn the fossils and put them back in the microwave. How long you will have to dry them depends on how thick your dough is. You can dry the fossils in the regular oven as well, on a low temperature, but it will take significantly longer.
When the fossils are dry, you can paint them (we used markers). After that, Ema tried to match the dinosaur to its fossil.
The next day we pretended to be paleontologists. I left clues (or tasks) on pieces of paper, put them in small envelopes and hid each of them with one fossil around our flat. Keep the first clue, hide the second one and the first fossil in a place that is the solution for the first clue. The third clue and the second fossil should be hidden in the place that is the answer to the second clue, and so on. I have hidden a small treat together with the last fossil, as a reward for a job well done.
I made two types of clues, a simpler and a more complex version. The simple one looked like this: I wrote Paleontologist’s map in the header of each piece of paper, the number of the task and the place where the fossil is hidden:
Paleontologist’s map
1.      The towel drawer
Paleontologist’s map
2.      The drawer with crayons
Paleontologist’s map
3.      Shoe closet, etc.
Or like this:
Paleontologist’s map
1.      What do you need to set the table? (plates, i.e. the plates drawer)
2.      What else do you need? (cutlery, i.e. the cutlery drawer)
3.      And what else? (serviettes, i.e. the small basket where we keep the serviettes)
The more complex version of the clues looked like this:
When my doll is ill,
Or something troubles my pet,
I have to check their health,
So I need my … (doctor’s set).

There is a place in your house
Where it is always cold,
Take a look inside,
Don’t be afraid, be bold! (fridge)
I had many more, but it is not easy to translate them into English and keep the rhyme. The other places around the flat were under the pillow, in the microwave, in Ema’s box where she keeps her hairpins, under the laundry basket, etc.
After I hid the clues and the fossils, Ema armed herself with tools for a paleontological expedition (goggles, flashlight, a small hammer, gloves and a magnifying glass) and set on with the task. If you have a small flashlight, I suggest you turn off or at least dim the lights in the room where the child searches for the fossils, it makes the search more interesting.
Next time Ema visits her grandparents, I plan to fill a large box with sand or gravel and hide the fossils in there, so that she can really excavate them.

Ema u svetu dinosaurusa 1. deo - Ema in the world of Dinosaurs part 1

Ema has been interested in the world of dinosaurs of quite a while. Everything started with the cartoons The Land Before Time and Dinosaur Train.
She kept asking us what dinosaurs really looked like, how big they were, what they ate, etc. So we bought her this book  - Sticker Activity Dinosaurs, published by DK. She enjoyed the book very much. It has lots of stickers, interesting texts appropriate for kids ages 4 to 5, practical tasks (a maze, a puzzle), creative tasks and lots more. We have learnt that there are herbivore and carnivore dinosaurs (Ema understands this difference like this: you can pet the herbivores, but not the carnivores because they can eat you), how big they are, what the spikes on their backs are used for and what the purpose of the dinosaurs' tails is. All in all, the book is great fun!

Then we went to the library and borrowed a giant book about dinosaurs - Vili's Tale about Dinosaurs. The book is really huge and offers texts about the most interesting dinosaurs, as well as 3D pictures of them. We have 3D glasses that we got in a newspaper called Blic, that has also published parts of the Dinology book, so now we can browse both.

There is a vast variety of books on the market that deal with dinosaurs, from sticker and activity books to encyclopaedias, but I suggest visiting your local library first.

In one of the books there was a dinosaur maze, which Ema really liked. She wanted to solve more maze activities, but, since we don't have a printer, I had to improvize. I copied one of the mazes we had from before and added the dinosaur theme. In these pages you can find ready made mazes (link 1, link 2, link 3). In the following pages you can find more interesting activities dealing with dinosaurs (colouring pages, Land Before Time related activities and games offered at the official web site of the Dinosaur Train cartoon).

Make sure to read my next post for more dinosaur activities :)

Naš novi član porodice - The newest member of our family

You have probably noticed that I have been away for a while (two months I think). The reason was this:

Kako njena starija sestra Ema kaže - do sada smo bili sami, a sada imamo bebu. Ema je presrećna, a mi pomalo nenaspavani.
Over a month ago our family was blessed with another member - Maja. As her older sister Ema says - so far we have been alone, but now we have a baby. Ema is overjoyed, whereas we are somewhat sleep deprived.

Čitamo se uskoro :)
I'll be writing some more soon :)

Šarena žirafa - A colourful giraffe

I have finally finished making this small amigurumi. I completed the crochet part months ago, but the stuffing and the sewing took forever. I greatly dislike that part of making amigurumi and postpone it till forever.
The pattern is free and you can find it here. The giraffe is very simple to make and you can use various colours and yarn types. I have used cotton, since I have it in abundance now (I am crocheting a blanket), but you can use whatever you like.
My daughter loves it and she has already comissioned a bigger one :)

Svetski dan pletenja u javnosti obeležen i u Novom Sadu - World Wide Knit in Public Day in Novi Sad

Plavi štrikaton NS Needles - NS Needles blue KAL

Glasale smo i izglasale plavo.

Our knitting group NS Needles has decided to organize two KALs this year. The first began on January 1st and ends on June 30th, and the second one begins on July 1st and lasts until the end of the year. The theme of the first KAL was to knit/crochet any garment in a previously determinted colour, whereas during the second KAL the task is going to be to knit/crochet a specific garment in a colour of our choice. We voted and the topic colour for the first KAL was decided to be blue.
I have knitted a shawl called Sonnensegel by Ulrike Altrogge, the pattern can be downloaded as a free Ravelry pattern here. The author has designed the shawl to be triangular shaped, but I decided to make it in a shape of a rhombus, thus having a reason to make two pom-poms :)
I used two types of yarn that I got as presents from my knitter friends: the lighter is Troitsk Yarn Angora (from a friend in Belgrade) and the darker one is Vlnap Geisha Color, a gift from Heklica.
12 knitters took part in this KAL, having knitted 17 garments so far (you can see them here).

Can Can rukavice iliti umem i ja da ispletem rukavice - I can can knit a pair of mittens

These are my first mittens! For a long time I have sighed at the sight of my knitter friends embarking on this journey, not having the courage to try it out myself. But, the time has come :)
The mittens are a gift for a friend, Nevena, the mother of my daughter's best friend. Last September they moved to Ireland and we miss them dearly. They do come to Novi Sad from time to time, and both my daughter and me very much look forward to these meetings. Not only do we catch up with the chit-chat and our kids get to spend a great time together, but Nevena always surprises me with fantastic presents - knitting magazines! For that, and the lovely book she brought for me last time, I am so grateful, since the publishing business in Serbia does not have an ear for knitters. At least not since 1983 :(

The mittens required a surprisingly small amount of Troitsk Moscow Chic Yarn (less than 50 grams using 2,5 mm needles), so I decided to knit a hat, too. I needed less than 75 grams of the same yarn for the hat (using 3,5 mm needles). I knitted the hat using a pattern of a similar one found on the Drops Garnstudio site (link here), I just adjusted for the cable from the original mittens pattern (which you can find here). The designer's name is Erica Lomax and the pattern is called CanCans.

Za izradu sam koristila predivo Troitsk Yarn My Baby i igle br. 3,5.

It's been quite a while since I've posted about my knitting projects. It's not that I've given up on knitting, it's just that my model is not willing to be photographed, and the weather has been so bad recently that we just couldn't find the right location for the photoshoot.
Anyway, I finished this vest in February. The pattern is called Wild Vanilla, and I've used Troitsk Yarn My Baby and 3.5mm needles.
The pattern is a joy to knit. It's got lots of cables, just enough to keep you occupied while knitting, but not overwhelmed. The vest proved to be a very practical piece of clothing, my daughter has been wearing all through the winter (and it has been a loooong winter).
It has also got a cute little cable at the back that makes a great detail, but I just couldn't get a good photo of it (check the pattern web site for a much more successful photo).

Čestitke za 8. mart - Mother's Day Cards - ver. 2013

Prošlogodišnje čestitke možete pronaći ovde, a one još starije - ovde.

We decided to give thanks to the lovely ladies in Ema's life, as we did last year, and to send them cards that Ema (at least, mostly) made on her own. I have found a great idea on this site. There is a male version of the card, too.

Our last year's card can be found here, and here you can find the ones from the year before that.

* * *

While we are impatiently expecting sunnier and warmer days, my daughter and me decided to activate our green fingers. We planted some flowerbulbs (narcissus, tulip and crocus bulbs). Truth to be said, I was somewhat late with planting them, there are supposed to be planted between September and December, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
And, while waiting for the plants to appear, I found a great idea for making string flowers on My kids make blog.
You need the following:
  1. corn starch glue (1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 cup of water, heat it and whisk it well untill it thickens. Then cool it till it reaches a temperature that it safe for kids to play with.)
  2. stash yarn in various colours, cut to pieces about 10 cm long
  3. cookie cutters in the shape of a flower or star
  4. a tray lined with baking paper
Dip the yarn in glue, use your fingers to remove excess glue and put the yarn in the cookie cutter. Then remove the cutter and repeat the process.

You can dry the flowers on the tray in a warm place overnight, or you can dry it in the oven. We chose the first method.

We used the flowers to make a birthday card for Ema's aunt, but you can use it to make a bouquet of flowers, or a mother's day card, or even a Valentine's day card (use heart shaped cookie cutters).
