Čestitke za 8. mart - Mother's Day Cards - ver. 2013

Prošlogodišnje čestitke možete pronaći ovde, a one još starije - ovde.

We decided to give thanks to the lovely ladies in Ema's life, as we did last year, and to send them cards that Ema (at least, mostly) made on her own. I have found a great idea on this site. There is a male version of the card, too.

Our last year's card can be found here, and here you can find the ones from the year before that.

While we are impatiently expecting sunnier and warmer days, my daughter and me decided to activate our green fingers. We planted some flowerbulbs (narcissus, tulip and crocus bulbs). Truth to be said, I was somewhat late with planting them, there are supposed to be planted between September and December, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
And, while waiting for the plants to appear, I found a great idea for making string flowers on My kids make blog.
You need the following:
  1. corn starch glue (1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 cup of water, heat it and whisk it well untill it thickens. Then cool it till it reaches a temperature that it safe for kids to play with.)
  2. stash yarn in various colours, cut to pieces about 10 cm long
  3. cookie cutters in the shape of a flower or star
  4. a tray lined with baking paper
Dip the yarn in glue, use your fingers to remove excess glue and put the yarn in the cookie cutter. Then remove the cutter and repeat the process.

You can dry the flowers on the tray in a warm place overnight, or you can dry it in the oven. We chose the first method.

We used the flowers to make a birthday card for Ema's aunt, but you can use it to make a bouquet of flowers, or a mother's day card, or even a Valentine's day card (use heart shaped cookie cutters).

Orange Tempest

I've finished this cardigan a few months ago, but little miss Princess wasn't in the mood to pose for it. Luckily, I caught her on a good day yesterday :)
I've used Troitsk Yarn Deluxe for this project, double stranded. Only the yoke was made with one strand. This is the first time I used this yarn and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It washes well, there are no knots in the skein and it's spun evenly. I especially like the wide range of colours the company offers.
The pattern is free and you can find it here.

Štrikerka u ribolovačkoj radnji - A knitter in a fishing gear store

I, evo šta sam pronašla:

My husband looves fishing. He rarely has the time to go nowadays, but nevertheless, he adores it. And, just like any true hobbist, he dreams about all the gear he would like to have and wanders round the stores with fishing gear with enormous pleasure. Just like me in a yarn shop. Anyway, sometimes I have to join him in these quests and wait for him to try out all the reels, whip around with different rods, look at the lures and hooks and get lost in his dreams. In the meantime I do my best to take part in this daydreaming, but then I start roaming the shop myself. And, at a certain moment, my knitting gene kicks in, and I start looking around for things I could use for my hobby. And in the photos you can see what I found.

1. This is originally supposed to be a lures box, but in the exciting life of a knitter it is now turned into a box for cross stitch threads (or any kind of threads for that matter). I love these kinds of boxes because they have compartments with adjustable sizes, so the possibilities are endless. I bought one for my mum, for sewing threads. Is larger, but also transparent, and has a handle, like a small case. The plastic is very durable, so I believe it will last me for quite a while.

2. This is a box for fish hooks. However, I turned it into a jewelery box, i.e. mainly an earrings box, for I keep losing them. It's great that it's transparent and the compartments are just the right size - perfect to fit a pair of earrings.

3. This is a set of small boxes that are screwed one on top of another. I guess they are for fish hooks as well, but I'm planning to use them for buttons, clips, eyes for amigurumi toys and similar small items. I guess that they could be used for spices, too.

4. A box for holding floats. I, however, decided to use it for storing single pointed needles, which I almost never use nowadays (I knit with circular needles). The box can be made longer or shorter by twisting it. I bought another one which I plan to use for storing spaghetti.

And here you can read about what Heklica found at the same store.

Topla zima i za decu Svratišta u Novom Sadu - A warm winter for the homeless children in Novi Sad

  • 64 kapa
  • 8 džempera
  • 2 prsluka

After exactly one a half moths of knitting and crocheting, our Charity project for the Homeless Shelter for children in Novi Sad has finished.

Our busy knitters and crocheters from the FB group "Zaplet" have made: 37 scarves, 64 caps, 8 sweaters, 2 vests, 2 pairs of gloves and 1 pair of legwarmers. We couldn't have done this without our generous sponsors - Naca021 and Bensedinkin dućan from Novi Sad.

These garments are to be part of Christmas presents and Ms Anita Jakšić, a spokesperson for the Shelter, extends her warmest regards and thanks all the participants of this project in the name of the children.

Još jedna aktivnost sa jesenjim lišćem - Owls, birds and autumn leaves

Even though we had quite a long autumn, I am still late with publishing this post. Here is another great way to spend an autumn day.

All you need is a drawing of an owl, lots and lots of smaller autumn leaves, scissors and glue.

The idea for this project came from this website, whereas the bird was an improvisation.

Šivenje za decu, drugi deo - Sewing for kids, part two

Već vidim i neke novogodišnje čestitke u istom fazonu...

I wrote a post, a few months ago, about sewing for kids. I said that for now we only sewed in straight lines or in circles, that we hadn't made it to some more complex patterns. Well, I am happy to report that our little activity now has a more practical use. We've made birthday cards for Ema's grandmother and greatgrandmother.
I can already see some New Year cards made with this technique...
