Osmeh i cvetić - A smile and a flower

Since this round of the flue didn't miss us aswell (coupled with pneumonia), this year's idea for a Mother's day card is an old one. You can find the instructions here, posted a few years ago. However, there is one kid more on the photo :)

Čestitke za 8. mart - Mother's Day Cards - ver. 2013

Prošlogodišnje čestitke možete pronaći ovde, a one još starije - ovde.

We decided to give thanks to the lovely ladies in Ema's life, as we did last year, and to send them cards that Ema (at least, mostly) made on her own. I have found a great idea on this site. There is a male version of the card, too.

Our last year's card can be found here, and here you can find the ones from the year before that.

While we are impatiently expecting sunnier and warmer days, my daughter and me decided to activate our green fingers. We planted some flowerbulbs (narcissus, tulip and crocus bulbs). Truth to be said, I was somewhat late with planting them, there are supposed to be planted between September and December, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
And, while waiting for the plants to appear, I found a great idea for making string flowers on My kids make blog.
You need the following:
  1. corn starch glue (1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 cup of water, heat it and whisk it well untill it thickens. Then cool it till it reaches a temperature that it safe for kids to play with.)
  2. stash yarn in various colours, cut to pieces about 10 cm long
  3. cookie cutters in the shape of a flower or star
  4. a tray lined with baking paper
Dip the yarn in glue, use your fingers to remove excess glue and put the yarn in the cookie cutter. Then remove the cutter and repeat the process.

You can dry the flowers on the tray in a warm place overnight, or you can dry it in the oven. We chose the first method.

We used the flowers to make a birthday card for Ema's aunt, but you can use it to make a bouquet of flowers, or a mother's day card, or even a Valentine's day card (use heart shaped cookie cutters).

To ćemo isprobati neki drugi put.

Here is a very simple idea for making cards. The design is not exclusively linked to Easter, so you can use the idea for any other occasion, or just for fun.
What you will need:
  • thicker paper for the cards
  • glue (ours is white, but turns transparent when dry)
  • corn semolina
  • a tray so that the semolina doesn't end up all around your flat
Since my daughter is not crafty enought when handling glue, I drew out the shapes and she was in charge of pouring the semolina. If your child is older or better at working with glue, you can use a pencil to draw the shapes you want and then he/she can trace them with glue.

We decided to use corn semolina since it has quite a vivid colour and it doesn't need additional colouring. However, you can use wheat semolina or even rice. Surfing the Internet I found some tips on how to dye rice - dissolve some food dye in rubbing alcohol, pour the dye and the rice in a freezer bag, close it tightly and shake it. Then pour the rice onto a tray and leave to dry. We'll try out this idea some other time.

After we had finished with making the cards, we continued to play around, so I used to glue to draw different shapes on regular paper, which my daughter covered with semolina. These works of art are now proudly pasted to our refridgerator.

8.mart, međunarodni dan žena - Mother's Day card

  3. skalpel

Having in mind that my husband and I spent the previous week playing nurse around Ema (a fever of over 39 degrees, lasting for 5 days), I was not really in the mood for the upcoming holiday. But, to take my mind off these things, I opted for reading some posts by my favourite bloggers. I came across this great idea for a Mother's day card on mothers don't operate on repeat  blog.

What you need is the following:
  1. a sheet of paper for making cards in the desired colour
  2. paper glue
  3. a scalpel
  4. a photo of a loved one (a child, or perhaps even you) with their hand stretched open and fist closed (I dare you to find such a photo when you really need it!)
  5. a paper flower (you can make one, but I bought mine)

Print out the photo in the desired size (compare it to the envelope, make sure it fits). When choosing a photo, it would be better to have the hand stretched out away from the face, it will make the placing of the flower easier. Cut out one small triangle above and one under the fist and pull the flower stem through these openings. Paste everything to the paper, add a nice message, put the card in the envelope and wait for the oohs and aahs.
